About Aberdeen
Aberdeen has been called the grey or silver city for a long while, but in recent decades the discovery of large oil deposits off the north east coast of Scotland have brought renewed wealth and vigour to this cold and isolated city. Prosperous, proud and cosmopolitan, Aberdeen has developed itself into something worthy of its 13 Britain in Bloom awards. With many thousands of years of settlement and use as a vital seaport city in the North East Aberdeen now benefits with plenty of historic sites and museums.Aberdeen city highlights should include a trip up Union street, spending time enjoying the variety of shops and admiring the famous granite streetscapes along the way. Taking in the beauty of the Aberdeen Beach, with its golden sandy tones and festive atmosphere is bound to become a highlight of any trip to the city, especially in the warmer months of August and September. The beach is also the best position to view the astounding Northern Lights of Aurora borealis.
The warmer months of the summer may provide a slightly more comfortable opportunity to see this Scottish harbour city, however the snowfalls of winter, provide a magical touch of delight and also reduced tourist numbers. The parks in Aberdeen have been consistently successful winners of the Britain in Bloom competition, providing the best excuse to visit the town during the warmer months of the year.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurants: For a harbour view and great local seafood visit Silver Darling Restaurant.
Shopping: Enjoying the established shops along Union street and George street can now be combined with the newer malls such as Union Square and the Bon Accord Centre.
Culture: Aberdeen's maritime history can best be explored at the Aberdeen Maritime Museum. St. Machar's Cathedral, situated in the old town,is another must see. A visit to the breweries of such distinguished names as Glenfiddich and Glenlivet can also be included on a trip to Aberdeen.
Architecture: Aberdeen and the surrounding shire provide many castles and museums worthy of a visit. Following the Caste Trail, signposted throughout the Aberdeen Shire, is a great way to experience The Drum Castle and many more.
