About Athens
The 2004 Olympics made sure Athens was granted a long overdue rebirth, both in terms of infrastructure and culture. Although Athens serves well as a gateway to the rest of Greece, there is good reason to stay in the city for a few days.Seeing the Acropolis and the Archaelogical Museum is a must, but sites such as Kerameikos and the Benaki Museum and Cycladic art are definitely worth sticking around an extra day or two for. Many tourists combine a visit to Athens with a taste of island life, the Saronic islands are only an hour or two away but the pace of life couldn’t be more different to the capital.
Splitting a week between the city and the islands would make a perfect holiday. Try planning a winter trip to Athens or alternatively over the Greek holidays as the city empties then. Carnival is a fun time to be in Athens and the weekends are generally quieter thus a good time to visit the museums.
