About Baltimore
The city of Baltimore is, from a tourist’s perspective, a great destination. This city has great character and plenty of charm. With the Inner Harbor area and the historic Fells Point providing plenty of village atmosphere in what is actually, in size, a significant American city. It is best to stick to the Inner Harbor zones of Baltimore and put the hype and reputation for crime in Baltimore aside. Not far from the Inner Harbor is the impressive Fort McHenry National Monument and Shrine. The British were defeated here during the Battle of Baltimore and this marked a significant turning point for American independence. Explore Lexington market and take in some of the local culture and food in one of the most impressive markets to be found anywhere. For some impressive collections of art, from almost every era and kingdom, the Walters brothers have donated their best to the Walter Art Gallery on North Charles Street.
October is definitely a sweet time to visit Baltimore, as the city is then hosting a Chocolate Festival. Another local event not to be missed is the Preakness Crab Derby in May. The Derby features locals rushing crabs across the finishing line and this is naturally the best time to devour the local specialty of crab cakes.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurants: For some popular Spanish dishes and great Sangria the Tapas Teatro Café is a true Baltimore gem. The restaurant also adjoins the Charles Theatre in the Station North area. For something tasty but with a tighter budget in mind, try the simple dishes at Jimmy’s Restaurant in Fells Point.
Culture: Edgar Allan Poe is a Baltimore native and the city proudly demonstrates his literary genius at The Poe House and Museum. Edgar Allan Poe’s gravestone is located not far from away in Westminster Cemetery.
Architecture and Culture: The amazing American Visionary Art Museum in Federal Hill is more than just another art museum. The museum’s directive is to take museum exhibitions towards somewhere new, focusing mostly upon the relationship between art and the human condition. The design of the building itself is worth the entry fee.
Shopping: The Inner Harbor district features the type of large scale malls featured in many US cities of this size. Try the Harborplace and Gallery for some classy shopping on the harbour. For some boutique or even antique shopping try North Howard Street for the Antique Row.
