About Boston

Boston is perhaps best known for its world-renowned academic institutions, but it also boasts grand architecture, a plethora of museums, a wealth of live performance venues and a rich history dating back four centuries. It has been home to poets and philosophers who led the Cultural Revolution and fought for progressive causes such as feminism.

This forward-thinking and barrier-breaking attitude is still very much felt in the city; the cutting-edge architecture and the opening of the Institute for Contemporary Arts goes to show how highly innovative thinking and art is regarded.

Boston consists of a number of diverse neighbourhoods: Beacon Hill, Back Bay and Downtown offer easy access to the theatres and shopping districts, the Kenmore Square area has more of a student vibe and lots of clubs and bars can be found here. South End is well known as a gay-friendly area lined with boutiques, restaurants and cafés.

The city is breathtakingly beautiful in late spring when all the trees are blossoming, and equally so in early autumn when the leaves are changing colour. Independence Day is celebrated with style in early July, but the cultural calendar is packed all year round.

Restaurants: Sorellina’s interior is a fantastic design restaurant. The menu is alluring and grand and it will set you back quite a bit. For a cheaper and more American style option try Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus Avenue.

Culture: There are so many museums to choose from, but the MIT museum, the Children’s Museum and the John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum are among the best.

Nightlife: The District Bar has a distinct cosmopolitan vibe and the cocktails are amazing. If cosmopolitan and contemporary doesn’t take your fancy, pay Doyle’s Bar a visit – a true old Irish charmer.

Shopping: The Bodega looks like any other store from the outside, but step inside and through a hidden door to reveal the shop within the shop which is actually the hippest trainer and design book shop.
