About Bucharest
The many Post-Stalin grey housing blocks, have unfortunately hidden many of the neoclassical gems that inspired Bucharest’s nickname: ‘Paris of the Balkans’. The best way to enjoy this city is to reserve judgement until the less obvious and hidden joys of the city have revealed themselves. Knowing where to go is the key to enjoying Bucharest, as the city has many harder to find but very rewarding sights and activities. The student scene and the inclusion of Romania into the EU in 1997 have recently stimulated a more positive and lively atmosphere into the city.To enjoy some of the nicer and more traditional sides of Bucharest, head to the historic centre where you will find a developing café, restaurant, club and bar scene. If the beggars, noise and stray dogs become too much, then head North to the glitzy richer area and explore the large expanses of the Herastrau Park. Here you can also visit the interesting open-air ethnological Village Museum.
Bucharest has a famously hot mid-summer and with limited air-conditioning, many avoid the city during this period.
Gekko recommends:
Architecture: The second largest building in the world can be found in Bucharest, the Parliament Palace is a massive must see.
Nightlife: Summer time in Budapest sees two dance floors, from club Zoom, open on the banks of the Lake and is a popular summer venue.
Culture: Visit the Museum of the Romanian Peasant and take in life from another perspective in this award winning and delightful museum.
Restaurants: For something a little cliché and ‘scary’ visit the popular and renowned tourist dive at Count Dracula Club.
