About Budapest
Unquestionably Central Europe’s most beautiful city, Budapest is well-known for its baroque architecture and it really is breathtaking stuff. But it’s not just the buildings that make this a special city. Parks brim with attractions, treasures fill the museums and the Turkish-style thermal baths pump out steam into the streets.A good starting point is the spectacular castle district and Parliament building at Kossuth Lajos tér, all of which can be done on foot in a morning. The walk is a great way to see some of the back streets and get a real feel for the city. A top tip for exploring Budapest’s modern art scene is the Gödör, an underground gallery where the roof is a shallow water pool at ground level in the middle of a park. Food and wine are excellent and cheap, with the courtyard cafés or 'kerts' of the Jewish Quarter, the best places to head try. Picturesque and generally inexpensive, they truly reflect Budapest's quirky and cool atmosphere.
The nightlife in Budapest is hot right now. Indeed, in recent years, Budapest has become the region’s party town, especially in the warmer months when outdoor areas called kertek (‘gardens’) heave with party makers. Ráday utca by Kálvin tér Metro is the place to head for bustling cafes and bars. It would be rude not to take in a spot of public bathing when in Budapest, so head to a bathhouse – there are loads that will suit every taste, traditional and modern. Which is a pretty good analogy of Budapest itself.
