About Dublin
Dublin’s reputation as a party city is well-earned but don’t let the Guinness trail stop you from checking out the hidden gems of this compact capital city. Obviously Dublin’s numerous pubs and bars are a big attraction, allowing you to sample the traditional Irish ‘craic’ – try O’Donoghues near St Stephen’s Green – or check out the hipster bars such as the Bernard Shaw on Richmond Street which tips its hat to Dublin’s two great passions outside of boozing, literature and music.Although the famous area of Temple Bar – otherwise known as the ‘Stag and Hen Do Quarter’ – is worth a visit, the rest of Dublin is far more enticing. Start with the shops, cafes and surprisingly good buskers of Grafton Street, take in the stunning Old Library at Trinity College and Smithfield market with the spectacular chimney and observation deck at The Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery. Make sure you take in the lovely Cobblestone Bar as the perfect alternative to Temple Bar’s insanity.
Another great place to wander off the tourist trail is the seaside village of Howth, a 20 minute train ride from the centre of Dublin. Wander along the harbour and you might be lucky enough to see seal pups and then grab a bag of fish and chips at Beshoff’s. All in all Dublin is the perfect weekend break destination. Easy to get around, enough party venues to keep you up all night but plenty of history and culture to soak in if you feel like something a little more sedate. And we managed to get through all of that without mentioning the famous Guinness Storehouse...
Gekko recommends:
Restaurant: Try media hangout The Unicorn off Merrion Row for top antipasti.
Culture: Take in a gig at The Temple Bar Arts Centre, which has an eclectic mix of top artists performing every night.
Nightlife: Drink at The Gingerman on Fenian Street – a favourite of trendy students and other party animals.
Shopping: Head to Dublin’s best department store Brown Thomas, which has everything you could want under one roof.
