About Frankfurt
Frankfurt differs from that of other German cities, in that post war development allowed for the addition of many multi story buildings, and the innenstadt slowly developed into the now famous collection of high-rises that Frankfurt is known for today. These high-rises, in the central area of Franfurt, house the banking and financial center of Germany and the rest of Europe.Frankfurt does however have an older and more traditional side to it. To experience this, head South of the river to the Sachsenhausen district, where the reconstruction of the traditional and historically significant buildings was focused - the carefully reconstructed Romerberg neighbourhood is especially interesting. While you’re there a visit to the taverns in Sachsenhausen and a taste of the local specialty Ebbelwei (apple wine) is a must for those wishing to submerse themselves in something truly Frankfurt. This city also boasts one of the busiest and largest shopping strips in Europe; the Zeil, which runs straight through the middle of Frankfurt’s Innenstadt.
Winter temperatures can fall considerably, therefore Frankfurt is best enjoyed during the Spring and Summer seasons. For a peaceful break from city life, head to the world class botanic gardens and parks found at the Palmengarten and the adjoining Grunebergpark.
Frankfurt boasts the largest convention spaces in Europe, therefore a timed visit with one the spectacular displays is a great option. A trip to any German city, in the early winter months, is not complete until the traditional Christmas markets have been seen and some Glühwein (spiced mulled wine) has been drunk.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurants: A visit to the Main Tower Restaurant and Bar, 200 metres high, is a must for those wanting to have a memorable meal. If however, you are on the lookout for something more locally inspired, visit the Apfelwein Wagner Restaurant in Sachsenhausen.
Culture: Boasting 13 Museums, including one dedicated to that of one of its former citizens: Goethehaus, history buffs will not be left disappointed. The Jewish Museum and the German Architecture Museum are also worthy of a visit.
Shopping: The Zeil can't be overlooked for variety and for those with an eye for brands and expensive labels. Located upon the Zeil 'Golden Mile' is the Zeilgalerie and the PalaisQuartier.
