About Glasgow
Glasgow used to be a byword for industrial decline and poverty but today it’s a city reborn. Using its immense cultural and artistic history as a catalyst, in the past decade it has become one of the most stylish and vibrant cities in the UK, spawning great bands, designers and artists.Which isn’t to say it has lost any of the colour and character which made its name. It’s still a city whose residents boast an impenetrable dialect, a quick and dry wit and a fondness of a wee drink. For all its glowering reputation, Glasgow is a friendly city in the main, with the stereotypes of old being firmly pushed into the background.
The first time visitor will also be pleasantly surprised with the grandeur of this monument to Victorian endeavour. From the architectural sophistication of the great Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose Art School building is a must-visit, to the sheer scale of the magnificent Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the city’s landmarks are easily accessible using the small underground system and mainly free of charge.
Nowhere in Glasgow demonstrates the city’s resurgence more than the West End, home to the university and now an affluent area full of fine townhouses, cute cafes and an arty crowd. The Merchant City in the centre is where Glasgow’s growing number of fine dining restaurants and tons of stylish bars can be found, although a walk down Sauciehall Street of an evening reveals Glasgow’s more rough and ready side. Thankfully it also has a proliferation of great music venues, from the ABC to Nice and Sleazys.
Even though religion has split Glasgow in the past, a new Sunday pursuit now dominates. The city is now one of the largest shopping destinations in the UK, from the posh designer boutiques of Princes Square to the huge outlets for High Street favourites along Buchannan Street. Perfect for a weekend of splashing the cash in a new city.
Gekko recommends:
Culture: Check out the People’s Palace, a museum of Glasgow’s working class history, including the story of the city’s famous dance halls to a pair of banana boots as worn onstage by Billy Connolly in the 1970s.
Bar: Go for a drink in Mono, a vegetarian cafe-cum-bar that also has a great record shop and a trendy crowd.
Food: Try the classy Stravaigin for modern dishes with a traditional Scottish influence.
Shopping: Watermelon in the West End is perfect for vintage clothing for boys and girls.
