About Helsinki
With a population of just under half a million and the tallest building being no more than 12 storeys high, Helsinki could be mistaken for a provincial city and not the capital of Finland. However, after a short while, you start to realise that the city is as cool as any capital and it achieves style by daring to be different but without trying too hard.In the cold and dark winter the city goes more or less underground, but in the spring the bars and restaurant overflow into the street with people desperate to soak up every little bit of the sunshine.
Half of the city seems to water with the beautiful harbour, with the ferries sailing in and out, being the heart of the city. The architecture in Helsinki is interesting, on one hand you have art nouveau buildings and Russian inspired domes, and on the other you have modernist buildings by one of Finland’s most famous sons: Alvar Aalto.
To admire some of his best work, visit the Finlandia Hall where you can also enjoy Helsinki’s talented philharmonic orchestra. To explore Finland’s history and old cultures, visit Finland’s Nationalmuseum, some of the most interesting exhibitions are those depicting the Sami culture.
Gekko recommends:
Culture: Finland’s strong history within art and design can be explored at the Design Museum in the city centre.
Restaurant: Restaurant Elite has long been a gathering place for Helsinki’s creative inhabitants. Paintings by some of the famous guests hang on the walls and the menu is interesting with a Finnish influence.
Shopping: Stroll around the Esplanadi and you will find Artek (Alvar Aalto shop) and Marimekko. For smaller independent boutiques, try Fredrikinkatu for fashion and accessories and Annankatu for antiques.
Nightlife: Most of the nightlife is located around Uudenmaankatu and Eerikinkatu so barhopping is easy. Bar9 is home to Helsinki’s trendies, and Cocina bar and Bar Tapasta are also popular with the hip urbanites.
