About Honolulu

Honolulu is the capital and main entry point into the Hawaiian Islands. Honolulu, despite the burgeoning population, still has a world-renowned relaxed and laid back attitude. The ever-welcoming locals, from a mixture of Pacific Rim nations, still provide visitors with an amazingly pleasant and effortless hospitality. Honolulu is seen by many as a chance to indulge in international cuisines at the city’s many fine restaurants and cafes, and has an abundance of modern activities, such as theatres, concerts, shopping and nightlife.

While the white sands and water sports of Waikiki beach are a must see, the other great natural feature of Honolulu and the Oaho Island is the Manoa Valley. This less frequented area features the tropical green reserves of the Lyon Arboretum and the exciting Manoa Falls. Hawaiian royalty and history can best be witnessed at the ‘Iolani Palace, which is the only official state residence of royalty in the United States. Honolulu is the largest city in Hawaii and has a constant influx of tourists, so bear in mind that the city itself will not present itself as the great ‘getaway’. When the bustle and touristic rush becomes too much, there is always the splendid and chilled out Waikiki Beach.

The year round balmy weather makes Honolulu an eternally enjoyable city and the delightful and endless wonders of Honolulu can be taken in every day of the year. The ‘winter’ months do feature a higher rainfall, however the rainfall is generally isolated and the temperatures still remain consistent.

Gekko recommends:

Restaurants: Indigo’s Asian cuisine features some of the most popular dishes in Hawaii. Found in Downtown Honolulu, this moderately priced diner is set in a casual Indonesian rattan style. For an even more inexpensive tasty Asian cuisine, try Legend Seafood Restaurant also in Downtown.

Nightlife: For an early drink with a view, head to the Lotus Lounge at the W Hotel on Diamond Head. If some fun and extra cocktails are needed, then join the hip and lively crowds at Lulu’s Surf Club.

Culture: For some hands-on entertainment and culture, the Polynesian Cultural Centre is a popular option. If you’re seeking Hawaiian culture, the lively and energetic Cirque Hawaii is a fantastic choice.

Shopping: The large Ala Moana Center is an open air shopping mall famous for its great labels and variety. For something different the swap meet market at the Aloha Stadium three times a week is a great way to mingle with the locals and pick up a ‘unique’ bargain too.
