About Kraków
Although Krakow is only the third largest of Poland’s cities, it is deservedly the most popular tourist destination. Krakow was fortunate enough to have escaped WWII bombing and since 1978, the Old City (Stare Miasto) has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city itself has one of the best examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture in the world. The major draw cards of Krakow is the Old City, the Wawel Castle and the Main Market (Rynek Glowny) - these can all be found in the centre of the town. The five museums inside the Wawel castle are definitely also worth a visit, in fact, this castle is so important to the Polish people that it has become the symbol of Poland. Whilst in the Old City, take a look at the almighty and awesome, busty fort building known as the Barbican. The whole of the Old City is littered with interesting buildings and museums for the lucky visitor to enjoy.
Beat the crowds and visit Krakow at the ends of the peak tourist periods: mid May to June or at the end of the season in late September to October, are good times to visit.
Gekko recommends:
Nightclubs: Krakow is packed with opportunities for an evening of clubbing. The Krakow nightlife is found hidden along alleyways and cellars radiating from Rynek Glowny. Join other foreigners at the popular club Prozak or head to the hip basement club Rdza.
Architecture: take in the astounding glass making abilities at the Basilica of St Francis. The stained-glass windows are arguably some of the best examples of this kind in the world.
Shopping: Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) located in the centre of Rynek Glowny is one of the easiest places to find some local genuine (and not so genuine) souvenirs. Galeria Centrum offers the modern range of clothes perfumes.
Restaurants: Try some modern healthy Polish dishes at Miod Malina. You’ll find this very popular restaurant in the prime location along the Royal Way.
Culture: A ride out of town (approx 60km) to the Auschwitz and Birkenau Concentration Camps is a sombre and serious reminder of mans capacity for inhumanity. The Auschwitz Camp features a museum commemorating the victims of the Nazi regime.
