About Lucerne

This beautiful Swiss city originated as a small fishing village used as a stop-over for alpine travellers, it is now a magnificent city with a steady flow of tourists coming to see this world heritage city now brimming with its own culture and art. Lucerne is also a great place to begin a journey into the wilds of Switzerland’s interior landscape. The panoramic views of Lake Lucerne, Mt. Pilatus and the curious Kapellbrucke (Chapel Bridge) create a very distinctive Swiss picture postcard town well worth visiting.

Ascend the steps to the top of the city walls (Museggmauer), to take in the stunning view of the Baroque and Renaissance style city below and to admire the view of the surrounding pristine lake and mountains. Visit the moving Lion Monument, carved out of the hillside depicting an enormous dying lion. Nearby is the amazing Glazier Garden (Gletschergarten), where glaciers created an impressive potholed surface over 20 million years ago. Gletschergarten also has a museum and the fun and kitschy Alhambra style mirror maze. However, a visit to Lucerne is not complete without a trip on a paddle-steamer across Lake Lucerne, or a journey up Mt Pilatus in a cable car.

Restaurants: Try the Old Swiss House for traditional, but pricey meals in style, found on the Lowenplatz. For more affordable but equally tasty Mexican meals try the Pacifico Mexican Restaurant at Hotel Schiller on Pilatusstrasse.

Culture: For those with a military interest, the massive Bourbaki Panorama measuring 1100m2 and depicting the soldiers in the Franco- Prussian war, is sure to be of interest.

Shopping: Lucerne has been selling Swiss souvenirs for a long time, so take your time to view all the great local shops and make a point of sampling the wares at the popular handcrafted goods at Bucherer in the city centre.

Architecture: The post-modernist Kunst and Kongresshaus Luzern is quite a stark contrast to the typical architectural style of Luzern. The major concert hall is the host of world class operas and the site of the Luzern Music Festival.
