About Luxembourg
Although Luxembourg city and indeed the whole country is small, the inhabitants have a very cosmopolitan attitude and most speak at least three languages. The fact that many European Union institutions are based here, along with numerous international banks, has contributed to Luxembourg having the highest percentage of foreigners of any EU country. Luxembourg is a beautiful landlocked country with green rolling hills, vineyards, forests and historical sites. Luxembourg city is divided into three areas, the old town, the grund (valley) and the modern Kirchberg Plateau where all the European institutions are based.Spend a day strolling around the cobblestone streets of Luxembourg City; starting with the medieval old center, which is a UNESCO world heritage site boasting almost cartoonlike spires, fortresses and underground passages. Then walk down the steps into valley also known as The Grund, where you can walk along the river admiring the old breweries and beautiful green surroundings. End the day with a coffee or renowned local beer in one of the many bars and cafes located in this picturesque part of town.
The easiest way to get around is without a doubt by car and it is worth renting one to explore the rest of this beautiful country. Spend a day in Vianden, visiting the castle and taking in the breathtaking views from the top of the hill. A stroll around the village is well worth it and even the drive there, through the forests and hills, wont disappoint. Wine lovers should visit the vineries in Mosel area, which are open to the public on the weekends.
Gekko Recommends:
Restaurants: Luxembourg boasts a huge selection of restaurants several of which have Michelin stars. If the weather allows, enjoy the excellent food, and view of the valley, on the terrace of Um Plateau in the old town. For those on a tighter budget Bacchus wont disappoint. This Italian restaurant is very popular with the locals and is busy most days so you’ll need to reserve a table.
Nightlife: Luxembourg has a very vibrant and fun nightlife. One of the most popular bars with the international population is Urban located just next to the palace in the old town. The old brewery in The Grund has recently been converted into numerous trendy bars and restaurants worth a visit. For something more cosy and characteristic, visit the Café des Artistes on Montée du Grund. If you’re lucky the piano player will be there entertaining the guests with Edith Piaf songs.
Shopping: The weekend markets on Place Guillaume and Place D’arme, sell lots of quirky antiques and local produce and crafts.
Culture: Visit the newly built museum of modern art (MUDAM) on the Plateau de Kirchberg. The building is designed by the famous sino-american architect I.M. Pei. Just next to it lies the new Philharmonie, which is also a beautiful building and hosts several concerts a week.
