About Maastricht
Although Maastricht is part of the Netherlands it does, in many ways, have its own unique identity. Its Roman beginnings and its neighbours France and Belgium, have all had a strong influence on the architecture and gives the city centre an old world atmosphere. The multicultural and multilingual culture and language of Maastricht gives it a very interesting and unique atmosphere.The real heart of this small city is found at the town square (Vrijthof), which is bordered by the magnificent Basilica St Servatius and the wonderfully red St Jan’s Cathedral. The two main highlights of Maastricht are undoubtedly the old city centre and the St Pieterberg caves. St Pieterberg’s enormous cavernous passages, have been created by the excavation of vast quantities of rock. Tours of the caves are a must see, as are the ancient city fortress remains, which can be found nearby.

Culture: with a mixture of students and locals of multiple languages and backgrounds, there is a vibrant and lively cultural scene in Maastricht.
Architecture: To understand the importance the city once held to the area visit the Helpoort (city gate). This monstrous defensive structure is thought to be the oldest in the Netherlands.
Nightlife: Claiming to hold more bars per square kilometre than any Dutch city, there are plenty of places to find a relaxed drink. The best bars can be found around the Vrijthof and Market Square. Take One bar offers over 100 types of beer, some with a decidedly powerful kick, it is a must for beer connoisseurs.
