About Madrid
Spain’s capital is a fantastic city for anytime of the year but it’s in the spring and the summer when the kaleidoscopic variety of life Madrid-style becomes apparent in the streets and on the grand plazas.Madrid has many things to keep a visitor intrigued. Amazing art galleries, an all-night party-focused nightlife and its evolution into a centre for style and shopping. And that’s before we get to the tapas bars and top restaurants that mean every meal can be a feast.
Even though Madrid is a relentless party city, you need to get up early to see the city’s main attractions, be it the Royal Palace or the famous Prado Museum. And if shopping’s your thing, try out the giant flea market El Rastro every Sunday. The Calle Huertas street or the Opera or La Latina areas are the places to head to for great tapas to keep you going for the night ahead. Remember that Madrid’s nightlife doesn’t kick off until 10pm. At that time the places to be seen are Calle Fuencarral or Malasaña or in the lively gay district of Chueca.
If the heat and buzz of the city centre gets too much, head to Alcalá de Henares, a world heritage site a short trip from Madrid. It's the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote and a great spot to wander around in the sun. Perhaps the best thing about Madrid is the laid-back attitude, siestas and passion for the good life. Spot on for a weekend break after a hard week.
