About Milan
Milan operates as the fashion and commerce centre of Milan and in many respects Europe and the world. Situated on the northern plains of Lombardy, Milan survived many invasions and destructive wars from its neighbouring nations to eventually thrive and develop into an amazing city of modern and ancient architecture, high culture and spectacularly vibrant fashion. The Milan highlights are not complete without a visit to the Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece of the Last Supper, which can be found in the refectory of the Dominican church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. For more on Leonardo’s brilliance, visit the Leonardo Da Vinci National Science and Technology Museum. Milan offers an almost endless amount of artistic and creative spaces, take a coffee break and then continue to enjoy the many world-class antique and ultra cool contemporary museums and galleries on offer.
Locals enjoy their own holidays in the heat of August, therefore many close their shops. However, this can make for a quieter Milan compared to the throbbing heat and pace of coastal Italy.
Gekko recommends:
Shopping: For window-shopping or for the serious shopaholic the Golden Quad (Quadrilatera d’Oro) is the place to find all the world famous designer boutiques. The Isola design district is also a great spot for those looking for the young up and coming designers.
Architecture: Climb the stairs and take in the view of Milan from the Gothic spires of The Duomo. Visitors should be prepared as those with sleeveless clothing will not be allowed entry into The Cathedral.
Restaurants: Milan offers some of the best Italian traditional restaurants, however it is best to avoid the over-priced touristy venues around the Duomo area in the centre of town. Take time to enjoy and observe the locals taking their coffee breaks at the smaller cafes and restaurants. The Milanese make and take their coffee seriously, impress them by following their lead and opting only for espresso after mid morning.
Nightlife: a trip to Italy and Milan is not the same without taking the time to enjoy a summertime stroll or pasaagiate with the locals and it is a great opportunity to show off your fashionable clothing purchases made during your trip. For great atmosphere visit the ever popular clubs Hollywood Rythmoteque and Café L’Atlantique.
Culture: Opera lovers should not overlook the most prestigious of opera venues in the world at Teatro La Scala (La Scala).
