About Moscow

Moscow reflects all of the changes that are at the heart of new Russia. It has culture and economic success in spades, unlike much of the rest of the country, and despite having a seedy side, Moscow is a city on the rise. Walk from ancient monasteries to modern skyscrapers and take in the sense of history and occasion which still pervades the city.

Late spring and early autumn are the best times of experience the city, when the parks are flowering. The must-see sights of Red Square, the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral are the monuments of communism but there are plenty of pre-revolution wonders to take in, with the famous ‘wedding-cake’ houses and the Bolshoi Theatre. Architectural buffs should check out some the amazing stations of the Metro, which resemble underground palaces.

For culture, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Fine Arts are mighty museums and are must-sees, whilst the Tolstoy Memorial Estate is ideal for literature fans. And if you need to get away from the bustle of the city centre, try the Botanical Gardens Apterkarsky Ogorod, founded by Peter The Great and over 300 years old. Another great place to escape to is the Vorobyei Gori or Sparrow Hills. Eating out in Moscow is also very different from a few years ago, with every taste now catered to, especially sushi which was much in vogue in Moscow recently.

Restaurant: Try Pushkin Cafe, rumoured to be Moscow’s finest restaurant, which serves all manner of Russian specialities.

Culture: Head to the Contemporary Russian History Museum to piece together uprest, the Space Race and even a section of Russian pop music.

Shopping: You might not think of Moscow as a fashion capital but head to Chapurin Couture, shop of the renowned Russian designer Igor Chapurin.
