About Munich

Munich is Germany’s third largest city and where the country’s wealthy trendsetters tend to hang out. The most prosperous city in Bavaria is full of folklore and traditions, but also of BMWs, designer labels and high-powered industry.

It has a rich cultural scene; the museums include impressive collections of artistic masterpieces. It is a little more grown-up than Berlin but its music and cultural scene can definitely compete with the capital. Marienplatz is the undisputed centre of the city and the location of the impressive town hall – Neues Rathaus.

Nearby are some of the city’s beautiful churches including the Italian Renaissance style Frauenkirche and the 16th century Michaelkirche. The local monasteries started the beer brewing traditions for which Munich is still famous and the HofBräuhaus is worth a visit. Schwabing is the former artists’ quarter and is now considered the most fashionable part of the city with a plethora of bars, restaurants and shops. For a quiet moment, visit the stunning Englischer Garten just east of Leopoldstrasse.

Tourists flock to the city from far and near for the Oktoberfest, which includes drinking a lot of local beer, singing, sausages and Lederhosen. The Christmas markets are also popular with the tourists as well as the locals and the summers are beautiful and a good time to enjoy the stunning countryside surrounding the city.

Restaurant: One of the most trendy restaurants (or food club as they call it) in Munich is the Barysphär. It’s got an innovative and contemporary menu which includes exotic features such as alligator steak.

Nightlife: The area around Münchener Freiheit in Schwabing is the best nightlife district with lots of bars, cafés and jazz venues. Atomic café is a trendy spot in the center featuring pop and rock music, DJs and sometimes live music.

Culture: Check out the Three Pinakotheks: The Alte Pinakothek is home to the oldest collection of paintings by the European Old Masters. The Neue Pinakothek houses European painting and sculpture from the second half of the 18th century and the 20th century. Finally, the Pinakothek der Moderne is seen as the world’s greatest collection of 20th-21st century art.

Shopping: Neuhauserstrasse and Kaufingerstrasse in the city centre are the two main shopping streets, and are lined with department stores and chains. More exclusive boutiques are found around Maximilianstrasse and Theatinerstrasse. Leopoldstrasse in Schwabing is popular with the trendies.
