About Oslo

Despite only having a population of just over half a million, Oslo still has a distinct cosmopolitan feel to it - mostly due to its growing café culture, crowded bars, active theatres and late night shopping. The locals are a friendly bunch, who know how to enjoy life, getting to know them is easy since most of them speak fluent English – especially after a beer or two!

Although Oslo is not known for its grand architecture, an eclectic mix of old and new, it does have some real gems such as the Medieval Akershus Slott and the 1930s style City Hall. The transformed former warehouse area around Aker brygge shows some of Oslo’s newer architecture and is also a lively retail and leisure sector. Many of the locals, being nature lovers, will list the fact that it is so easy to leave the city as one of their favourite things about living in Oslo. Oslofjord is beautiful and a great place to hike, cycle, sailing and skiing, the city also has a great nightlife with the bars staying open late and an intriguing emerging music scene.

The summers in Oslo are beautiful and the many daylight hours means you have even more time to soak in the buzzing atmosphere of this interesting city. The winters are cold and dark, but they offer a chance to combine your city trip with skiing and is also a great excuse to visit some of the many cosy bars.

Gekko recommends:

Restaurant: Sydøst is located in the trendy Grünerløkka area, housed in an old, spacious bank building, and is one of the most popular restaurants in town. Eating out in Oslo can end up being an expensive affair, prices on alcohol are among the most expensive in Europe, a great cheaper option is Lorry which offers a warm inviting atmosphere, serving simple yet honest food.

Nightlife: Many Norwegians will hit the bars after a couple of hours of vorspiel (pre-party) involving drinking at home, so the bars rarely fill up until around 10pm. Blå, located down by the river and often have great live music.

Culture: The weird and wonderful sculpture park – Vigeland is one of Norway’s most visited attractions and is definitely not one you’ll forget in a hurry.

Shopping: The main shopping district is in Frogner. Here you’ll find lots of fashion boutiquesm antiques and art galleries.
