About Oxford
The short journey to Oxford from London makes it a popular daytrip, but the city holds so many great nightspots and hotels well worth staying on for. The population of Oxford is now recognised as cosmopolitan and features a great mixture of backgrounds and, perhaps as a consequence, many popular and trendy bars, clubs, cafes and boutique stores. The picturesque golden buildings of Oxford are one of the many highlights of a trip to Oxford. There are over 30 separate colleges in Oxford, all of which can be seen on foot. Make sure you don’t miss out on the interesting Bodeleian Library, the Christ Church College, Magdalen College and Merton college.
The Oxford Castle is a fantastic visitor’s centre, demonstrating the best and worst of times in the rich history of this city. Oxford also holds many wonderful and incredible museums showcasing artefacts from around the globe, such as the Natural History Museum, The Rivers Museum and the ancient Ashmolean Museum.
Gekko Recommends:
Shopping: The Covered Market has some of the more alternative stores to those found on the busy High and Magdalen Street. Not far out of town is the discount store centre of Bicester Village, where you’ll find many of the boutique stores at a reduced price just a 25 minute train ride from Oxford.
Architecture: The Radcliffe Camera was designed by James Gibbs in the English Palladian style in the mid 1700s and houses the Radcliffe Science Library. This outstanding and opulent circular building is closed during the busy exam periods but can always be viewed externally.
Restaurants: A great selection of restaurants can be found in Oxford, including the fantastic and authentic Japanese cuisine found at Edamame on Holywell Street. For something quick and cheap the popular Greens Cafe is a great place to eat and drink.
Nightlife: Start your evening with a drink amongst the mixed and friendly crowd at The White Horse on Broad Street and then catch some live indie rock music at The Jericho Tavern on Walton Street.
