About Reykjavik
Nestled between mountain ranges and facing the Faxaflói Bay, Reykjavik feels less like a city and more like a large frontier town. Iceland was established by the Norwegians and later became a Danish colony finally gaining independence in the forties. Most Icelandic people speak fluent English and have a very welcoming and friendly nature towards travellers. The Hallgrimskirkja Tower will provide an amazing view over the city. Although it is mainly dominated by concrete 70s buildings, it is still incredibly neat and tidy and the mountains provide a beautiful backdrop. Iceland has truly been gifted in terms of natural beauty and wilderness and provides lots of opportunities for amazing trips. Visit the nearby geysers, waterfalls, rivers, volcanoes, hot springs, glaciers or explore the sea life on a whale watching tour. A visit to the 'Hot Pots' geothermal pools, to take in a naturally heated swim with the locals, is also highly recommended.
The best time of year to head to this Northern city, depends on your reasons for visiting. The summer months offer plenty of daylight hours, but the winter months only provide approximately four hours of winter sun. However, the darker months are the best time to see the magnificent Northern Lights.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurants: Relax and enjoy the varied and reasonably priced meals at Enrico's. A great range of Restaurants can also be found along the charming main shopping strip called Laugavegur.
Shopping: The best shopping in Reykjavik can be found alongside the great restaurants at Laugavegur and a burgeoning shopping street runs off the Laugavegur on Skólavödustígur towards the Church tower. Keep in mind that the cost of living is still relatively high in Iceland.
Culture: Visit the Hafnarfjordur viking village just out of the city to take in the historic 'Town in the Lava'.
Nightlife: Icelandic people love to party; catch the midnight sun and enjoy the now famous bars and clubs along Laugavegur or track the runtur (pub crawl) around the city. The cost of alcohol is quite high, so the locals often drink at home and hit the bars later in the evening.
