About Riga
The Latvian capital has belonged to Sweden, the Hanseatic League, Germany and The Soviet Union; each having left their mark on the make up of this city. The resulting cityscape is marvellous and most visitors find it a very rewarding place to visit and the growing number of hip hotels only add to this.The old fairytale city blossoms with creative and trendy bars and festivities and is perhaps the only Baltic-city to have a real big-city buzz. Visitors should however, be aware of the growing bag theft problem in the city.
Explore the Old City centre on foot and slowly take in the glory of such buildings as the Riga Castle, St. Jacobs's Cathedral and the Freedom Monument, which interestingly, was closed for visitors during the Soviet times.
The best time to visit Riga is in the summer and autumn when the days are longer and more time can be spent enjoying the beautiful city streets. However, the snowfalls in winter do enhance the city's beautiful buildings and parks.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurants: Indulge and lose yourself in the native Latvian buffets, found at the Lido Recreation Centre. This complex is spread over three floors and is quite a unique experience.
Shopping: Riga is blessed with a Soviet style Central Market that is both cheap and large. Look for the five large glass-fronted buildings beyond the bus depot in the centre of Riga.
Culture: For a museum with a difference try the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum. Churches, farmhouses and windmills create an atmosphere reminiscent of Latvia's past.
Nightlife: Riga has an established and varied nightclub and bar scene, offering something for everyone – not only stag party groups. Many of the most popular nightclubs are in the Old City, including Club Essential and Nautilus.
Architecture: The Historic City Centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and nowhere else in Europe is the German Art Nouveau better witnessed.
