About Rio de Janeiro
The name is exotic and the city itself won't disappoint. Rio is breathtakingly beautiful; set between gentle mountains covered in tropical forests and miles of legendary sandy beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema. It's also a buzzing city thanks to relaxed, athletic and lively residents: the Cariocas. Rio is the ultimate party city even outside the carnival season in February. The locals make beach life a true art form - watch the surfers, paragliders, kite-surfers, joggers, beach football and beach volley games while sipping a Caipirinha or super-chilled beer. You’ll definitely not need a book to keep yourself entertained while soaking up the sun.
Head over to the artists’ district of Santa Teresa. Some would argue this bohemian town in the hills, is the coolest part of Rio. For a beautiful view of the city, take the cable car up Sugar Loaf or the train to the Christ or Corcovada.
For lovers of the beautiful game, try to catch a match at the Maracana. The best is a Flamengo vs Flumininese derby, known as the Fla-Flu.
At night most Cariocas enjoy eating, drinking, talking and gigs. There are loads of restaurants and bars to choose from. You need to try the churrascarias (all-you-can-eat meat restaurants), sushi and pizza.
Live music is a popular evening pastime. After all, Rio is the home to bossa nova style of music and many world-famous singers, musicians and composers. There are also plenty of nightclubs for those who don't want to get up too early for the beach the next day. Rio is best in between April and September, as it rains less. Having said that, Carnival is an amazing experience and the whole city parties in February.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurant: Try Marius Crustaceos, Leme or Porcao Rio's.
Shopping: Check out the Fashion Mall, Sao Conrado, Rua Visconde de Piraja, Ipanema and the Crafts Art Fair.
Culture: The Sao Bento Monastery, the Museu de Arte Moderna set in beautiful surroundings.
Nightlife: Dance until the early hours in the samba capital of the world – visit Lapa for the best live music. Listen to some great live music at Estrela da Lapa or Canecão.
