About Rome
With its magnificent history and unique archaeology, it’s no wonder thousands of tourists flock to Rome every year. The city is a truly enchanting combination of culture, style and romance that captures the imagination and takes you back in time to the birth of the Roman Empire. Its urban scenery is like no other city in the world, exemplified by stunning tourist-packed spots such as The Colloseum, Spanish Steps and Vatican City. As the home of Catholicism, wherever you go there always is a religious reminder in one way or another. The Pantheon, formally a temple to the Gods, is now a spectacular Catholic Church where the renowned artist Raphael is buried. The dome of the church is simply breathtaking, with its diameter equalling the height of the church and thus creating a perfect hemisphere with an oculus in the centre.
The animated locals encapsulate the spirit of the city, and as you wander through its lively streets, marketplaces and cobbled alleys, expect to discover cafes full of espresso drinkers and vibrant pizzerias whilst an army of buzzing Vespa scooters pass you by.
But it’s not all hustle and bustle in Rome. If you want to take a quiet break away from it all, Villa Borghese, an ancient landscaped garden situated just north of the Spanish Steps, is the perfect place to escape to.
Gekko recommends:
Culture: The world-famous Borghese Gallery houses a breathtaking collection of art including works by Raphael, Rubens, Caravaggio, Titian and Canova.
People Watching: Rome’s city squares are the places to go to get a sense of the city's vibrancy. The Piazza Navona is a the place to go if you fancy a cappuccino or espresso whilst people watching.
Restaurant: With plenty of pizzerias and trattorias to choose from, especially around the Piazza Navona, you’ll never be too far away from delicious pizza and pasta. For a taste of traditional Roman food, head over to Gianicolo Hill for great priced authentic dishes.
Gelateria: Ice cream is the perfect evening snack and you’ll find some of the best gelaterias nearby the main squares.
