About Rotterdam
Today, Rotterdam distinguishes itself as being the largest port in Europe and the industrial centre of The Netherlands. However, don't expect a pure industrial landscape, as heavy bombing during WWII allowed for the harbour city to develop afresh and a modern and creative approach has been used at every opportunity. Another distinctive Rotterdam character is the high ethnic diversity, and the high percentage of young people also adds to the spirit and buzz of the city. When you first arrive in the city, a great way to get your bearings is to go up the Euromast Tower, which gives you a clear overview of the city and the harbour operations. Rotterdam justly claims the title of architectural capital of The Netherlands, this being best observed at the Netherlands Architecture Institute and one of the most famous examples of the cube house.
If you find yourself in The Netherlands during the tulip season between late March and May, then a trip to the colourful fields north of Rotterdam is a must. June is a good time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds and if you’re a bit of a film buff, you might want to go in January during the International Film Festival.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurants: For Dutch cuisine and a great atmosphere try the Brasserie Henkes at Delfshaven. In summer complete your dining experience with a walk along the harbour.
Shopping: For something local and independent try the developing village within the city area known as Pannekoekstraat. Great eateries and cafes can also be found here.
Culture: For those looking for something lively and fun try the Fit For Free Dance Parade in mid June.
Nightlife: Rotterdam neighbours the fun city of Amsterdam but competes well to offer something for almost all tastes. A strong and ever changing bar and nightclub scene can be found in Rotterdam.
