About Saint-Petersburg
Peter the Great built St Petersburg with the vision of creating a European styled city in Russia. The baroque and neoclassical architecture as well as the network of canals, definitely give the city a European feel and in turn the locals do see themselves as European – and also a little more sophisticated than their Easterly neighbours.Indeed it was St Petersburg who encouraged democracy in the early 90’s. Today the inhabitants are continuing to break traditions and explore new ideas; currently the possibilities of consumerism, music and art are hot topics.
The city has a strong tradition for literature and music; Pushkin and Dostoevsky are only some of the many famous writers who made St Petersburg their home. Opera and Ballet also have a long and prosperous past in the city and the Mariinsky Theatre still shows some of the early ballet and opera companies. On the embankment of the Neva river, that divides the city, lies the Winter Palace and Hermitage, to the South of Neva lies the historic old town where the Church on Spilled Blood and the Kazan Cathedral.
During the summer, when the sun is up nearly all night, the city really buzzes and the parks are filled with blossoming tress. However, even during the cold Russian winter the culture and beautiful architecture lights up and warms the city.
Gekko recommends:
Restaurant: Magrib is popular with the young and trendy. Its part bar and part restaurant which serves Caucasus-style grilled meats and Armenian dolma.
Shopping: Nevsky Prospekt is St Petersburg’s main shopping street, further East lies the Gostiny dvor which is a shopping arcade with hundreds of traders.
Culture: The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture. It is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, its collection comprises nearly 3 million items thus the guided tour is recommended.
Nightlife: Look out for poetry evenings and live acoustic music at Stray Dog Café, and also at Che.
