About Sofia
Sofia is a delightful surprise. This city has developed quickly in the last ten years, from a city corrupted and economically troubled, into a modernizing and appealing holiday destination.Sofia is now reflecting less of its Soviet past, fresh influence and improvements made from the increased tourist trade have led the city into a more prosperous time. Also, the Inclusion into the EU in 1997 has given new hope and hype to the city. The city’s history is reflected in its architecture, which forms a mixture of styles and influences. Sofia once belonged to the Ottoman Empire, some of this heritage can be experienced by visiting the only operational mosque in Sofia: The Banya Bashi Mosque. Sofia’s biggest and proudest monument to its past is the St Alexander Nevski Memorial Church & Crypt and is well worth a visit.
Sofia is also a great place to venture out on a hike from, or to the ski slopes of Mt. Vitosha. For a trip out of town, visit the Monument to 1300 years of Bulgaria, which is a large structure built in a Cubist style, commemorating the establishment of the first Bulgarian Empire.

Nightlife: One of the most popular and busy nightspots is the city’s own Buddha Bar, also featuring a late evening disco. Those wishing to join the student scene should venture south to Studenski grad.
Architecture: To visit the oldest known structure in Sofia head to the St. George Rotunda, which is from the 4th century and bordered by remains of the ancient town of Serdica.
Culture: To see something different, try the hourly changing of the guard at the Presidency building. The high kicking/stomping soldiers make the trip well worth the effort.
Restaurants: For traditional and ‘rustic’ dining, take in the great atmosphere and local dishes at Pod Lipite.
