About Split
Split is located on the coast of Croatia, boasting glorious summers where the beaches come alive with sunbathers, windsurfers and sailing boats. The town was founded by the retired Roman Emperor Diocletian in approx 330AD and developed, from his Palace and its walls, into the second largest Croatian city. Listed as a World Heritage site, the Diocletian Palace and the centrepiece Cathedral are some of the most spectacular and interesting ruins in existence. The palace is actually home to thousands of Croatian locals and is also the living heart of the city, known as the old town (Grad). The marble street, radiating from the old centre, house many modern delights and is where the best cafés and clubs are found. The seafront promenade Riva, has been modernized and now attracts a mixture of locals and visitors. East of the old town lies the most popular local beach of Bacvice; a must for sunbathers and to the other side of the old town lies the picturesque Marjan peninsula, featuring traditional cottages built into the hillside.
Split holds several festivals throughout most of the year, however this city is best enjoyed during the summer period, especially when the city hosts the Summer Festival featuring many live bands performing in and around Split.
Gekko recommends:
Shopping: Visit the Split Daily Markets to find just about anything you may or may not need. Alternatively get amongst the locals and the bartering at the colourful Green Market (Pazar) just east of the old town.
Culture: Split is fortunate to have many museums dedicated to showing the city’s rich culture and history. The most popular of these include the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, the Museum of Croatia and the Mestrovic Gallery.
Architecture: The Cathedral of St. Dominius dominates the palace grounds and the best view can be seen from the 60m climb up the Belfry tower. This Cathedral was built to hold Diocletian’s mausoleum it was later added to and altered.
Nightlife: begin your evening with the popular cafés along the Riva seafront and later join the hip crowd at the trendy Pels2 in the old town.
Restaurants: For a Dalmatian meal with a view over the marina and Riva seafront, journey over to Restoran Jugo.
