About Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv (or TA to most) is an ever growing, thriving, cosmopolitan city that, to many, is the last thing they would expect to find in Israel, a country steeped in so much history and culture. The city is alive day and night, weekday and weekend and you’re never more than 20 minutes away from the beach.

Head to Jaffah, the old town, to experience the birth place of the city. Go north through the Neve Tzedek district and on to Rothschild Boulevard, one of Tel Aviv’s most impressive streets, lined with restaurants, bars and some incredible Art Deco buildings. Many people gather here simply to meet and socialise in the warm evenings.

On Dizengoff you’ll find pretty much everything you need from shopping, cinemas, more restaurants and bars and the renowned Dizengoff 99, a bar with plenty of local history. Another place that provides all the entertainment required for a good night out is Tel Aviv port, offering a huge selection of restaurants, clubs and bars, pulling in locals and tourists alike.

Only a 45 minute drive from Tel Aviv you can escape to Jerusalem, one of the oldest cities in the world, steeped in history and significance. Make sure you have enough time as there is so much to take in. Visit the Wailing Wall, the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Yad Vashem or the Israel Museum. Book a shared taxi or take an organised tour, you’ll find plenty of options to get there and back.

Tel Aviv gets very hot in the summer months and the air is heavy with humidity so the best months to visit are in the Spring and Autumn, although the locals can be seen hanging out at the beach all year round. Factor 30 plus is well recommended.

Gekko recommends:

Shopping: Try the trendy Sheinkin area for one-off outlets or the boutiques of North Dizengoff for some hip designers. The Shuk HaCarmel or Levinsky Markets are always bustling or for a real flea market experience head to Jaffa. Factory 54 in Herzliya offers some great value designer brands.

Restaurants: One of the best dining experiences in Tel Aviv is Nanuchka on Lilenbloom St in the south of the city, always a lively evening in a small Georgian restaurant and bar. The chain Japanika offers good value sushi and can be found on Dizengoff and other locations in the city.

Nightlife: The most popular club in the summer months has to be the old Dolphinarium on the beach, a huge outdoor terrace is open till the early hours. If you’re looking for something smaller try Penguin or the Block for some great nights and big name DJ’s.

Gekko says: The Israelis respect their public holidays so check when you travel as you may find supermarkets, restaurants, leisure facilities and even the television channels affected by significant dates in the calendar.
