About The Hague
The Hague is often considered to be more sedate and calm than its more hectic neighbour Amsterdam, however the locals and many visitors find there are more than a few reasons to enjoy this city. The Hague is in fact a city of bike riders, green parks and the home of the Dutch Royal family - this city really has plenty of its own personality. The Hague is composed of the Old City and the New City districts plus the beachside resort area of Scheveningen. The Hague is renowned for its small town feel, however this city boasts many grand and world-class attractions, most of which can be found in the Old City based around the Binnenhof. The gardens and beautiful chambers of the Peace Palace are amongst the most famous of the Old City attractions and another highlight is the Mauritshuis. This Gallery holds many of The Netherland’s greatest artworks including Vermeer’s ‘A Girl with a Pearl Earring’. Another must for visitors is the quirky creative displays of Dutch graphic artist M C Escher at the Escher in the Palace.
The happening beach resort of Scheveningen is only 15 minutes travel from the centre of The Hague and features an old fashioned Pier, a large Casino, shopping malls, great cafes and of course the endless sand beaches. The North beach is the most popular spot in summer.
Restaurants: Due to the large Indonesian population, there is an established Indonesian restaurant scene in The Hague. For one of the best genuine Indonesian meals outside of Indonesia head to Garoeda Restaurant. For something simple and relaxed try the De Zwarte Ruiter on the Grote Markt.
Nightlife: Many revellers party in the city centre however, many of the larger nightclubs are found at Scheveningen and tend to stay open quite late into the night.
Shopping: The Hague’s affluence and cosmopolitan nature is best demonstrated by the variety of great shopping outlets in the city. The Haagsche Bluf holds some of the most prestigious brands in antique shops found in the heart of the Binnenhof area.
Architecture: Recent modern developments have brought renewed interest to the skylines of The Hague. 21st century architecture fans should visit the area around the Railway station in New City.
