About Valencia

Valencia is famed for its nightlife, the wild Las Fallas spring festival and the stunning architecture of its Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. Inevitably, the city compares with Barcelona, its better-known neighbour up the Mediterranean coast, which is harder working, louder and more attention-seeking.

Until recently, for the arbiters of travel, Valencia has been the less noteworthy of these two Spanish ports. Its gentler pace may stem from the surrounding agriculture, especially its renowned orange groves and the rice paddies that explain the local speciality, paella.

The America's Cup, the world's biggest and most prestigious yachting event, has transformed the port area, which was turned into one of Europe's largest urban regeneration projects with over €1.5 billion invested. An amazing marina will appeal to even the most nautically challenged visitor.

Gekko recommends:

Restaurants: Try Casa Navarro and the Pepica for a traditional paella.

Shopping: Calle Jorge Juan is the place for designer boutiques, while the Barrio del Carmen has plenty of vintage demin, retro shades and general hippy accessories.

Nightlife: Try Radio City or Piccadilly Downtown in the Barrio del Carmen for dance music, or Loco in Calle Erudito Orellana for more funky Latin sounds.
