About Venice
Venice is made up of 117 tiny islets floating on a lagoon, 400 bridges and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s brimming with art, culture and unique architecture and a large number of tourists. It is possible to escape the crowds by heading to the quieter districts such as Castello and Cannaregio or by taking a boat to San Giorgio Maggiore to take in the view from the church bell tower.Losing your sense of time and direction is easy while wandering through the winding lacework of canals and alleyways – one can easily spend a week here without running out of things to do and see. Cruising the Grand Canal in one of the public waterbusses is a nice way to view the city, and then enjoy an espresso and some people watching at San Marco square. Finally, join the long queue to see the famous wonders of St Mark’s Basilica.
Outside the summer months it can rain quite heavily so it is worth packing an umbrella, and also your wellies as Venice floods around 60 times a year – mostly between September and April. The world famous annual Carnival in Venice, held in February, transforms the whole city and it is an experience to treasure.
Restaurant: Try to get to Ca’ d’Oro Alla Vedova before all the locals fill up the place. Alternatively dine and sip Bellinis with the rich and famous at Harry’s Bar. After all, when in Venice…
Shopping: For clothes Calle Larga Marzo XXII can’t be missed. Browse through the books at the Little Market of Miracles in Campo Santa Maria Nova.
Culture: Visit the Gothic church of Madonna dell’Orto where several of Tintoretto’s paintings are displayed, as well as his tomb.
Nightlife: You’ll find most of the partying locals on the San Polo side of the Rialto Bridge. Venice is not known as a late-night city and many of the locals head for the Mainland on the weekends.
