About Vienna
Vienna’s magnificent past is easily recognised in the city’s grand imperical palaces, bombastic baraque interiors, museums and squares, but perhaps above all in the Hofburg where the Habsburg rulers lived. Nevertheless, there is more to Vienna than it’s historical aspect. It is also one of Europe’s most dynamic urban spaces and is home to some of the most provocative contemporary art.Sip a cup of Vienna coffee in one of the city’s many Kaffeehäuser (cafés) - they and their waiters are a national institution. If you’re feeling adventurous, they offer long menus of creative coffee recipes including egg yolk, honey and cognac, or just start with a classic Melange.
To avoid the crowds, travel outside the key tourist periods. The Carnival time, also known as Fasching season, is a great time to see the fun side of Vienna life. It takes place in February and involves the locals wearing weird and wonderful costumes, lots of cheap beer and street parties.
Gekko recommends:
Culture: There is so much to choose from but the city’s modern art gallery, MUMOK, is a good start. It houses lots of art from the Actionism art movement – some of it quite disturbing but fascinating none the less.
Restaurant: When you’re ready to drop from looking at all the art treasures at Albertina, retreat to the camel colour leather seating at the museum’s restaurant. For a real treat visit the raved-about Steirereck in the former Milchhauspavillion which is a grand Jugendstil-vintage dairy.
Nightlife: Austrians have a real passion for electronic music and thanks to venues such as Flex and Roxy dance music can be enjoyed in style. The Strandbar Hermann at the city beach in Hermannpark is a great place to hang out with the locals.
Shopping: Bernhart sells some very cool young designer labels at reasonable prices. You’ll find one on Mariahilfer Straße and one on Kärntner Straße.
